Epic Problem (UK) im Interview

Epic Problem ist eine Punk Band aus England die sich 2011 gegründet hat. Gitarrist Epic Problems war unter anderem Gründungsmitglied der legendären UK-Band Blitz. Im Dezember kommen Epic Problem für 5 Shows nach Deutschland auf Tour, die von uns präsentiert wird. Wir konnten vorab mit Sänger und Gitarrist Jack und Mackie ein Interview führen.

AFL: Hey! Wie geht’s? Könnt ihr Epic Problems kurz vorstellen? Seit wann gibt es euch?

Jake: Hey Simon! Ich bin Jake, Sänger und Gitarrist von Epic Problem. Unser restliches Line-Up setzt sich wie folgt zusammen: Morri: Bass/Vocals, Mackie: Gitarre/Vocals und Simon: Schlagzeug.

Epic Problem ist eine „richtige Band seit Ende 2010/ Anfang 2011, obwohl Mackie und ich die Band schon zuvor geplant hatten. Mackie erschien eines Tages aus heiterem Himmel am Haus meines Vaters an den ich damals gewohnt hatte und gab mir eine Kassette in die Hand. Er fragte mich ob ich bei den Songs ein paar Vocals drüber singen könnte, um zu sehen ob sich daraus eine Band entwickeln kann. Ein kleines Problem war, dass ich damals zum einen keinen Kasettenplayer hatte und noch nie zuvor Lead-Sänger in einer Band war, haha!

Die Gründung der Band hat dann ein wenig länger gedauert. Nachdem wir die ersten Demos hatten kamen dann später Morri am Bass und Greg an den Drums dazu. Der Rest ist Geschichte!

AFL: Ihr kommt Anfang Dezember für 5 Shows auf eine kleine Deutschalnd Tour. Die Vorfreude ist sicher riesig oder? Seid ihr zum erstenmal in Deutschland auf Tour?

Jake: Ich kann es kaum abwarten! Die Tour ist mein einziger Urlaub im Jahr. Ich persönlich war über die Jahre recht häufig in Deutschland. Das erste mal besuchte ich Deutschland im Alter von 16 mit einer Band namens Kamikatze Sperm. Dann war ich dort so ziemlich jedes Jahr mit anderen Bands auf Tour oder machte in Deutschland auch mal Urlaub. Ich weiß also wie wie toll es bei euch ist!

AFL: Die Tour wurde von Subkultura Booking gebucht. Wie kam der Kontakt zwischen euch zustande?

Jake: Nico von Subkultura Booking hat uns vor einiger Zeit kontaktiert, ob wir Interesse haben mit ihn zusammenzuarbeiten. Es hat sich alles ein wenig hingezogen weil wir Probleme hatten einen festen Schlagzeuger zu finden. Jetzt haben wir ein feste Formation und wir sind alle fleißig dabei. Ich denke die Tour und die Zusammenarbeit mit Subkultura kam jetzt genau zur richtigen Zeit für uns!

AFL: Seit euer Gründung habt ihr eine Menge Veröffentlichungen herausgebracht! Aber ausschließlich 7” und Splits! Habt ihr Pläne irgendwann auch ein komplettes Album zu veröffentlichen? Ich hab auch gesehen das ihr vor kurzem eine CD mit allen Songs von 2011 bis 2014 auf CD herausgebracht habt. Coole Idee!

Jake: Das wir bisher nur 7” und Splits veröffentlicht haben hängt auch mit den Problem der Instabilität des Line-Ups zusammen, was wir die ganze Zeit hatten. Es war schwer richtig Schwung aufzunehmen, da die Besetzung immer ein wenig schwammig war. Die Aufnahmen mussten auch immer schnell im Kasten sein, da es möglichst kostengünstig sein sollte! Wir haben es im Blick ein komplettes Album herauszubringen, aber wann es soweit ist wissen wir noch nicht.

Die Entscheidung unsere bisherigen Veröffentlichungen nicht auf CD sondern nur auf Vinyl und digital herauszubringen war meine. Ich liebe Platten und denke das Vinyl einen viel größeren Wert hat. Natürlich kam irgendwann auch der Punkt wo wir sagten, dass auch CD hermüssen. Hauptsächlich deshalb weil unsere Schallplatten in der Regel schnell vergriffen waren. Deshalb haben wir auch alle Songs von 2011 bis 2014 auf eine CD herausgebracht. Leute die Interesse an unsere Musik haben kommen so viel billiger an unsere Musik!

AFL: Mackie eine Frage an dich! Du hast in der legendären 80er Punk Band Blitz gespielt. Du hast Blitz damals mit gegründet oder? Kannst du uns ein wenig mehr über deine Zeit mit der Band sagen? Denn ich denke ich bin nicht der einzige der Blitz zu seinen absoluten Lieblingsbands zählt!

Mackie: Ich und Nidge haben Blitz gegründet. Wir kannten Carl, der wiederum Charlie kannte und so war die Band schnell komplett. Wir waren durch Freunde und Familie eng mit den beiden Bands Attak und The Violators verbunden. Wenn ich heute darauf zurück blicke war es schon genial das alle drei Band in einer solch kleinen Stadt (New Mills) hervorgegangenen sind. Es war eine tolle Zeit!

AFL: Habt ihr ansonsten zuvor in anderen Bands gespielt?

Jake: Ich habe über die Jahr in ein paar Bands gespielt: Kamikaze Sperm, War Coma, Offbeat Heroes und Dangerfields. Ich spiele nebenbei auch noch in der Hardcore-Punk Band Ich schreibe außerdem ein haufen Solo-Sachen., welche möglicherweise nie das Licht der Welt erblicken, haha!

AFL: Welche Bands zählt ihr den zu euren Einflüssen?

Mackie: Vor allem “Old-School”-Sachen wie The Clash, Fugazi oder Stiff Little Fingers. Aber auch Bands wie Leatherface, Off With Their Heads und Paint it Black.

Jake: Ich war damals stark von der 2ten Generation des Anarcho-Punks beeinflusst. Zum Beispiel von Bands wie Conflict, Antisect, Crass, Flux of Pink Indians usw. Das hat sich über die Jahre ein wenig geändert. Ich bin mehr und mehr zu den Melodic-Punk Sachen gekommen.

AFL: Was macht ihr sonst so außer Musik mit Epic Problem? Habt ihr einen festen Job und was macht ihr in eurer Freizeit?

Mackie: Wir arbeiten alle in Vollzeit. Unsere Freizeit verbringen wir fast auschließlich mit der Band!

Jake: Ja wir müssen leider jeden Tag auf die Arbeit. Was ich auch immer an Freizeit restauriere ich Oldtimer. Nicht das billigste Hobby, aber auch nicht das destruktivste, haha!

AFL: Welche Bands sind den bei euch zur Zeit angesagt? Und habt ihr eine absolute Lieblingsplatte?

Mackie: The Slow Death, Leatherface und Off With Their Heads!

Jake: Mehr oder weniger sind das bei mir eigentlich die selben. Dazu kommen Bishops Green, Social Distortion, Nothington und Pretty Boy Thorson. Mein Lieblignsalbum ist denk ich „Mush“ von Leatherface. Obwohl es sich wohlmöglich oftmal ändert, haha!

AFL: Danke für das Interview! Man sieht sich auf der Tour! Habt ihr Abschlussworte die ihr loswerden möchtet?

Epic Problem is a punk band from England which founded in the year 2011. Guitar player Mackie was a founding member of the legendary punk band Blitz. InDecember Epic Problem will play 5 shows in Germany. We could talk before with Jake and Makie in an interview.

AFL: Hey Guys! How are you? Firstly thank you for taking time for an interview. Please introduce short yourself. Since when do you make music together? How many members you are and so on?

Jake: Hey, I’m Jake – Lead singer/Guitarist in Epic Problem. (In their absence!) our current line-up is Morri: Bass/Vocals, Mackie: Guitar/Vocals and Simon: Drums

Epic Problem have been a ‘proper’ band since late 2010/early 2011 although it was conceived as an idea between me and Mackie before then. Mackie turned up at my Dad’s house (Where I was living at the time!) one day out of the blue, Quickly introduced himself and handed me a cassette tape and asked if I’d track some vocals over them to see if it could be made into a band…
The main problems I had at the time were, A. I’d never done lead vocals in a band before, and B. I Didn’t have a cassette player! Haha!

The latter problem was easily sorted, the former took a bit longer (As you can probably hear in our very early stuff). Shortly after these first ‘Demos’ We recruited a Good friend of Mackie’s: Morri on Bass, and Greg on Drums. The rest is History!

AFL: In the beginning of December your small German tour with 5 shows will start. Are you looking forward? Is it the first time of you visiting as musician Germany?

Jake: I seriously can’t wait; it’s my only holiday of the year! I personally have been to Germany quite a lot over the years, first time at the age of 16 with a band called “Kamikaze Sperm” in 2007, and pretty much every year since then With various other bands and also on holidays etc. I know how great it is over there!

AFL: The tour was booked by Subkultura Booking. How came the contact to Subkultura and you?

Jake: Nico from Subkultura contacted us a while ago, it was supposed to happen earlier but we’ve had all sorts of trouble over the last year or so with drummers so we’ve not been terribly stable! We’ve got a solid lineup now and we’re eager, so it came at the right time!

AFL: Since your foundation you release a lot of records but “just” 7” or splits. Have you plans to release a full-length the next times? I saw also that you release all songs between 2011 and 2014 on a CD. Cool Idea!

Jake: The decision to release singles and splits came naturally really, the problem with the afore mentioned instability with lineups etc meant that to keep momentum up we had to stagger releases etc, and also meant that the recording etc could be done quickly and relatively cheaply.

Doing a full length LP is in our sights but when that will happen I don’t know.

The decision to release only records/digital rather than CD was mine – I personally love records, I feel they have more worth to a band but of course it came to a point where we needed something with all our releases on them, mainly because records go out of print a lot quicker, which is why we did the “11-14” anthology. Makes it far cheaper for people who are interested!

AFL: Mackie one question to you. You’ve played in the legendary 80ies punk band Blitz. You was one of the founding members, am I right? Can you tell us a little about your memories with Blitz? Cause I think I’m not the only one who counts Blitz to one of his favorite bands ever!

Mackie: Me and Nidge formed Blitz, We knew Carl, and he new Charlie, so it came together really quickly, we were soon followed by Attak and The Violators, all connected through family and friends. Looking back now it was amazing for 3 bands to all spring up in a small town, never mind release records and get out and gig.happy days, it seems sooo long ago.

AFL: Have you Jake, Morri and Greg played in other bands before?

Jake: I’ve played in a few bands over the years, Kamikaze Sperm, War Coma, Offbeat Heroes, Dangerfields and I still play in hardcore punk band Dead Subverts and write/record a lot of solo stuff (Which will probably never see the light of day!!)

AFL: Which bands and music do you count to your influences?

Mackie: Personally old school stuff like the Clash,Stiff Little Fingers, also Leatherface, Off Width Their Heads,Paint it Black, Fugazi, loads of stuff really.

Jake: I was influenced musically by a lot of the 2nd generation anarcho bands in my forming years, Conflict, Antisect, Crass, Flux of Pink Indians… That’s changed over the years, I’m more into melodic punk stuff these days (Still has to have an edge!) but it still influences a lot of choices ive made in my life up to now.

AFL: What are you doing beside of making music with Epic Problem. Have you steady jobs? What are you making in your spare time?

Mackie: We all work full time; spare time is band time really.

Jake: Yeah sadly we all have day jobs, from joinery to social work! Whatever spare time I get these days apart from the bands is taken up by running and maintaining classic cars/motorbikes – not the cheapest of habits but certainly not the most destructive, haha!

AFL: What are your favorite bands at the moment? Do you have any all-time favorite record?

Mackie: The Slow Death, Leatherface, OWTH,

Jake: Yeah them three for me too! Bishops Green, Social Distortion, Nothington and Pretty Boy Thorson are my artists of the moment though.

My all time favourite album is probably “Mush” by leatherface too – Although it does change more often than I’d like to admit, haha!
