The Oblivians – populair favorites.
Being born in 1980 I grew up on MTV for the most part, liking any kind of music featuring guitars. I started playing myself at 11 years old and the biggest influence was music like guns n roses, classic rock and all that stuff. When I got to 16 however I had the luck to go to see the oblivians in “the lintfabriek” the Belgian version of “cbgb’s” that moment changed my live! The oblivians were a 3 piece band , drums and 2 guitars and all 3 members sang. That moment I realized that anybody can start a band and so I did. I bought that record that night and I still listen to it weekly almost. It sounds perfect, everything is distorted and fucked up and the songs are pure gold, no
bullshit punk image, cool tattoos or the perfect clothes, just perfect songs. Album highlight for me is the song “bad man” I really think it is as good as any Bob Dylan song!!! If you wanna start a punk or garage band I believe you should listen to this record!

MC5 – Kick out the jams
This one needs no introduction I think? Just after I formed my first band El Guapo Stuntteam after seeing the Oblivians the band were also experimenting with guitar solo’s ! Something that is been looked down upon in the garage scene… This album however has it all, screaming solo’s big riffs , great songs and still very punk garage. They are maybe one of the most important bands off all time. This is their debut album from 1969 recorded live and the first track has the lead voices by guitarist Wayne Kramer. What band would do that?? No ego’s involved for sure. It’s a trip that goes from old school R’n’R trough punk, garage ,psychedelica and freejazz and very high energy!

Muddy Waters – the Chess Box
If you ever think blues sucks you could be right if the only blues you know is Joe Bonnamassa. Muddy Waters will change your mind , this box contains 72 songs of raw electric Chicago blues. The blueprint of Rock and roll.

Link Wray – anything…
Just anything from this legend will do… He is the atom, the spark ,the first ray of sun.
Rumble has only 4 chords but is says a million times more than most music does.

The Cramps – A date with Elvis
The start of this record alone got me in to this! That tremfuzz guitar opening is still one of the greatest sounds iv’e ever heard ! Poison Ivy never plays one note too much. This record’s from 1986, and the only one that has Ivy singing on it! Again, great songs and a great album cover!

Roky Erickson – The evil One
After Roky recorded one of the best songs of all time, you’re gonna miss me with the 13th floor elevators and got arrested for weed he made this solo album with the Aliens. Most of the songs were written while Roky was in a mental hospital and the lyrics are about Satan,Monsters and ghosts. Produced by Stu Cook ,the bass player from CCR this album sends chills down my spine.
It’s a haunting record not made for radio or succes. Top 10 album off all time.

Jimi Hendrix – Axis:Bold as love
Ok, It’s hard for me to choose between Hendrix records. For now I’ll pick this one.
A great record to play in the summer, It makes me feel good anytime I hear this kid genius play and sing. It’s like the music and playing is from another world. It’s not “punk” or “garage” but fuck it, this is a great record !!! I mean, if you don’t like Little Wing you must be dead inside!

The Detroit Cobras – Mink, rat or rabbit
A record with only covering of old r’n’r an soul songs but played with the right feeling , a little dirty but most off all sang by the great late Rachel Nagy. Insane good vocals that you will fall in love with. This record also contains a cover version of bad man by the oblivians but here’s it’s bad girl. Do yourself a favor and check this out! Also perfect record to put on for a party! All killer no filler.
The Monsters – you’re class i’m trash
A band that was a big influence on me when starting out. They began a little more pschycobilly I think but unlike most bands they only get better and better!!! This record is So simple and stupid it’s truly genius. There is no other band like this, trash, punk rock and roll but not like you know it.
Beatman is not only a great singer but also a very clever songwriter. And please check them live, best show there is.

Reigning Sound – Love and curses.
Yeah, Greg Cartwright begins and ends this list. After the oblivians he started this band, only good records but this week this is my favorite!
Maybe the best modern “garage” band there is. Never macho, always good songwriting and not afraid to look beyond the book of rules. You can tell they also like bands like the Beatles!

Ok, that’s my list but I also have to mention the following
The Sadies, dead moon, little Richard, the Beatles, the sonics, all the back from the grave records, jon Spencer blues explosion, the remains, etta James, dusty springfield, dolly parton, the gores and thousands more!!!!
