„I almost died today. My heart stopped. My prognosis isn’t good. I hope I have a few more days, weeks, months, but it looks like days. This may be my last post. I love Nancy.“
Seine Frau Nancy Barile schrieb:
Hi Everyone, I wanted to let you know that Al Barile passed away this morning. I was with him. You all know he fought a hard, hard battle. He spent last day with Chris, Jaime, Angie, and his best, dear friend Scott, and me, and even though he was on comfort care, it was clear he knew we were all there, and he was so happy about that. I never met anyone who was his own person as much as Al was. No one made me laugh more. There was always a story. We loved each other unbelievably, and my heart is crushed into a million pieces. I am so incredibly grateful for our 43 years together. I can’t even think of how to go on without him, but I know he will ALWAYS be with me. I take great comfort especially, in knowing he and Flippy are now reunited. I want you all to know how much Al appreciated your outpouring of love to him. It truly meant a great deal to him. You know I will have a lot to say about Al’s time on this earth and his impact and his legacy, as the days go on, but for now, I’m going to need some time to be with my closest friends and family. He made this video for our anniversary a few years ago.
Neben The Kids Will Have Their Say (1982) gilt auch die darauffolgende EP Get It Away (1983) als absoluter Klassiker.

It’s a sad day for Hardcore. We have lost a major contributor and part of the Hardcore movement. As I’m sure most of you know NYC and Boston has had a rivalry that goes back quite far, not just in sports but also in Hardcore.
They made no secret of the fact that they did not like us, and we Me in particular hated them. A lot of it stemmed from them being straight edge and we thought they were kind of up the DC scenes ass, and us well, we liked getting fucked up and doing stupid shit. It all came to a head when Al wore a shirt to A-7 that said „KILL NY“ it kind of pushed things over the edge and a few Boston bands got beat up and SSD eventually disbanded.
All of that being said, SSD were a big influence on the few straight edge bands that came out of the NY area. I didn’t like them on principle back then but in hindsight they were definitely one of the better bands of the time and definitely represented Boston Straight edge harder than anybody (despite Spinger lol). I reached out to Al when I found out he was sick and told him – „Im sorry that we didn’t get to bury the hatchet sooner and it was an honor to have whatever meaningless beef and rivalry that we thought we had although we never should’ve actually had one. I always enjoyed your band and wish you nothing but the best“….
It is a sad day for HC
Go put on some SSD and have a great day
