Hi my name is Niels I am 34 years old and I sing in Cornered. I have been asked to write up a little description on how my local hardcore scene is doing.

I had a hard time choosing 5 bands to talk about in this article because there are many bands from around here that are pretty active so before I kick off I have to apologize to every band from the Leeuwarden area that I chose not to write about. Here we go!

1Oi-Fight-8

Originated to play on one occasion which is the big Jelmer and Leo oi-birthday party which usually takes place somewhere in April in our favourite bar the Mukkes. This band, fronted by Goof who is a legend who never sang in a band before, plays mostly covers from Oi! The genre. I heard they still practice so don’t be surprised to catch them at the next Uit je Plaat or Hardcore Vrijdag so you can sing along to your favourite Last Resort and Cock Sparrer tunes.

2Tempest

This band has been working on their debut record in their practice room for about a year and a half now. I have yet to hear a completely finished song by them but the rehearsal tapes I got to listen to remind of crossover the way my mom used to make it. Fans of DRI, SOD, Slayer and more recent stuff Power Trip will not be disappointed. I hope we will be able to catch a Tempest show in a local venue in 2021 as we would all love to see sceneking Huli back on stage again.

3MOG

Started out somewhere in the early 80’s and did some pretty gnarly stuff. It sounds punky and pissed off to me, their later stuff is a bit more experimental in my opinion. The abbreviation stands for Muziekvereniging Ons Genoegen and I had my friend Sietze school me on the history of this band that did a sick 7” a craprap 7” and two LP’s which are more progressive musically. They have only just reissued their Radio Rock LP which looks like a complete discography.

Pick-Up Records is where you can pick this one up. It’s all-in Dutch unfortunately but it’s definitely worth a listen. Check out this song, it’s rough and you can tell they knew how to play their instruments.

4Sun-o-Bathers

Are Leeuwarden’s answer to NOFX, Kid Dynamite, Teenage Bottlerocket and TSOL. They are probably the most active band in the neighborhood, or were at least until the COVID-19 epidemic struck the punkrock scene hard. Their new EP called ‘FLOATER’ is out on Morningwood Records run by Leeuwarden-West legend Jouke Rispens. Check out their song ‘a tribute to Scott McClinsky’ or something like that. I was never a big Ten Foot Pole fan so.

5Oppakkuh

Are a band formerly known as Murder INC. who are from the same era as MOG (mentioned above) but now fronted by Leeuwarden Powerhouse Menno. The songs are about whatever Menno goes through and that can be a lot of different stuff. Because it’s not the most popular/hip kind of music I have a hard time thinking of bands that sound like it. Fans of powerviolence and Infest will probably be into it. Vocal wise it sounds more like Left for Dead. I don’t know. It’s definately a ‘see them live’- kind of band as far as I’m concerned. I don’t know what they’re up to now but I can assure you they will piss off 90% of the crowd at every show. One way or another.
