10 Records Worth To Die For: #194 mit Ed (Not Scientists, Uncommonmenfrommars, Sons Of Buddha)

1SEPULTURA – ARISE

The first cassette I ever bought. Actually my grandma bought it for me, I had never heard of the band but I chose it because the cover was sick. It was the most brutal thing I had ever heard at the time and I loved it although I didn’t fully understand it after the first listen. Still my fave album of theirs and of the genre.

2BAD RELIGION – SUFFER

I was a metalhead before I heard this record. This changed everything for me. Bad Religion had no leather pants, no makeup, they looked like regular people, I could relate. After years of hanging up Heavy Metal posters of dudes with tattoos and pointy guitars on my bedroom walls, this was a significant difference and it made me think « that’s what I want to do! ». They had smart lyrics, they were fast and aggressive but melodic, this completely redirected my musical compas. My mom enjoyed this better than Slayer.

3NRA – LEADED

In my opinion the best punk album to come out of Europe. Saw them live every time I could, as well as for this album tour. Great records, great live band. Met them a couple of times, friendly guys. At one show in Lyon the singer Aziz spotted me in the crowd, « Hey! This guy! Not a fan of his band but he’s a good dude ». I thought that was pretty punk and made me laugh.

4SPERMBIRDS – SOMETHING TO PROVE

This is also the best punk album to come out of Europe. The intensity of Lee Hollis’s vocals is just incomparable. This record is loaded with classic hits and they are by far one of the best punk bands I’ve ever seen live. I’ve had the privilege to tour with them in Germany with my old band once and didn’t miss a single set they played. The song « Anything with an engine » on their last album « Go to Hell Then Turn Left » has a crazy Easter egg in the lyrics that means the world to me.

5FAT MUSIC FOR FAT PEOPLE COMP

These FAT comps were so good we listened to them like actual albums on repeat, and every time one came out we would have to figure out how to get every band’s records, it was like a treasure hunt. Every band on this comp became instant favorites and shaped the way we would make music for the next two decades.

6METALLICA – AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

I forced my little brother Forest to listen to this cassette until he could prove to me he knew all the songs, only then he could give it back.

7WEEZER – BLUE

There are two kinds of Weezer fans, the « after Pinkerton everything sucks » fans and the ones that love « Beverly Hills ». I’m the third kind, and there aren’t many of us around: I just love Weezer, old and new. I was the nerdy looking loser kid at school, and seeing Rivers gave me hope, he turned nerdiness into cool and that made me feel better about myself. Weezer is probably my favorite band in the world. And I dig the new SZNZ EPs too, fight me.

8DEVO – OH NO IT’S DEVO / FREEDOM OF CHOICE

When I got this CD compiling both albums, I was weirded out but in a good way. It was unlike anything I had ever heard before, punk but like from another planet. They broke all the rules I thought I knew about songwriting, and they were much more than just a band. I was instantly hooked and they have become a big influence for me. Devolution!

9SLAYER – DEVINE INTERVENTION

My introduction to Slayer, Still my favorite.

10THE CURE – DISINTEGRATION

I have to admit for some reason I was kind of late to the party on this one. My head was buried too deep into the punk scene for so long. I’ve loved the Cure as much as anyone else since I was a kid, I had the first couple of albums, a Best Of comp and that was it. But much later on when I heard this record it blew my mind. That fucking bass sound. Every song on this thing is a masterpiece. Got to see them live for the first time recently, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

11BLINK 182 – ENEMA OF THE STATE

A lot of people love to hate this band. I’ve always loved Blink. I actually like some of their later records better but this might be the best pop album ever.

12MEGADETH – RUST IN PEACE

« How does this guy play what he plays and sing what he sings at the same time? » is what I always thought when listening to Megadeth. Some of the first riffs I learned to play on guitar were from this record. I loved that the drum sounds and fills felt more punk than metal to me, at least until Dave Mustaine ruined that by remixing everything but the original version is a metal masterpiece.

13BRACKET – NOVELTY FOREVER

My love for Bracket is similar to my love for Weezer. They are one of the most underrated bands on Fat Wreak Chords and in my opinion one of the best. They had a truly unique sound in the sea of 90s punk bands thanks to their masterful vocal harmonies , and I learned so much about singing and songwriting by listening to their records. I’ve played Bracket records so much in the van and at partys that my friends banned me from ever playing them again!
