Yo! My name is Jordan. I sing from a band from Chicago called Kharma. The Chicago scene has always had a consistent base of really good bands coming out of it. Here’s a few that I think people should know:
If Chicago Hardcore was a religion, this band would be the bible. The Killer was a band that I never got to see, unfortunately. Their 2004 record Better Judged By Twelve Than Carried By Six is a classic and one of the best records right come out of Chicago. They were supposed to play their first show in years at The Rumble this year but unfortunately The Rumble was postponed due to covid.
Multiple. Homefront. Chaos. This is my favorite active Chicago band. I’d describe them as extremely in your face musically. Lyrically, their songs are unapologetically angry and straight forward. Their Self Titled EP and split with North Carolina’s Invoke are both equally great. They’re a newer band so they don’t have much out but what has been released won’t disappoint.
Bitter Thoughts was the first Chicago hardcore band I saw. Members of MH Chaos made came from Bitter Thoughts (and various other bands). Bitter Thoughts‘ brand of hardcore was a very groovy but still heavy at times take on the NYHC style. I definitely recommend their Self Titled EP.
Buggin is a newer hardcore band from Chicago. They have a more straight forward hardcore style. They recently released a Self Titled EP at the beginning of this year. That record is definitely work checking out.
Bodybag is a band featuring members from the original lineup of No Zodiac. One of those members being Daniel Bond, who sadly passed away. His riffs were the backbone of Bodybag, IED, and No Zodiac. Bodybag’s death metal infused beatdown sounds is very aggressive and doesn’t let up. I recommend their records Hard Death and At the End Of Time.
