10KISS-Alive!
ZEKE wouldnt exist, but for the fellowship surrounding this 2 platter set. High energy 3 min. straight rock n roll tunes, often followed by long riff oriented jams. We still play these tunes at practice. Sometimes half our practice time consists of this. Yep. That’s right: KISS
9Ramones-It’s Alive
Growing up in Fayetteville Arkansas in the ‘70’s watching horror and Biker flicks with my dad led me to be drawn in by the cover of this lp in the record section of Consumer’s Market down the street from our house. ZEKE’s live format is based on seeing Ramones perform live in the Rock n Roll High School movie. Every song: genius. No breaks. No bullshit.
8Ted Nugent-Free For All
What an asshole. But, damn, that guitar work! The energy! The whole LP isn’t great, but the title track along with tunes like Dog Eat Dog and the slow burn of Writing On The Wall are worth the price of admission. Ted’s live shows were a huge influence on me and my approach to guitar and vocals. I mean, fuck him, but , hey, Lovecraft was a racist jerk as well…Cancel the art??? Nah…
7Minor Threat-Minor Threat
When I moved to LA for 3 yrs., I developed two things: a taste for punk rock, helped along by a gf who was a veteran D.C. scenester, with extensive knowledge of everything from early Detroit proto-punk to Flipper, Fugazi, and Big Black (this was ‘86), and a full fledged dope addiction. I listened to this record daily. And Im certain that is the reason why our songwriting comes off like it does.
6Black Sabbath-Master Of Reality
I cant listen to this record anymore. Every nuance is cataloged in my grey matter, so I dont need to. This is what I listened to EVERY single day in Arkansas. It seemed to deliver me from my dismal surroundings, and I always tell folks, ‘ everything I needed to know about politcs, spirituality, relationships with people, principles, and institutions, I learned from the first 3 Sabbath lps.’ Truth!!
5ANTISeeN-Noise For The Sake Of Noise
Punk rock is cool. But I cant do it. Im from the South!’ This is what I thought until these hillbillies showed up on the shelves of a local record store I visited every week as an avid collector of recorded rock music. I thought, ‘ what the hell is this? They look like dudes I grew up around.’ Sure enough, staight outta Dixie with a blues tinged singer who resembled someone who might’ve been in Skynyrd for a minute, these dudes unleashed fuzz drenched HC from North Carolina! Tunes like Wifebeater, NC Royalty, Mill Workin’ Man and others propelled me to write my own tunes and show them to other people, not always with great results, but it got me off my ass, and eventually, away from drugs. Thanks, Jeff! Thanks, Joe!!!
4Iron Maiden-Iron Maiden
This record blew me away as a kid. As a guitarist, it was a fundamental game changer. It forced me to become a somewhat disciplined player with some real fretboard understanding. It influenced alot of what I do now. The energy is high. The Schenker/Roth/Blackmore style guitar work is beautiful and the vocal delivery is almost punk. Ive bought numerous copies in various formats since my errant lifestyle doesnt facilitate holding on to things for very long.
3Pink Floyd-Wish You Were
Here I’m not going to waste anybody’s time explaining this.
2The Who-The Kids Are Alright
A chronology of Who performances through the mid 70’s. Huge influence on my songwriting and music that got me through a bizarre childhood. Townshend’ chord voicings and committed approach really helped shape me.
1Aerosmith-Rocks
Has to go on here because it was just EVERYTHING to me between 9 and 13. Two great guitarists and a wild ,heavy approach on this record. Tyler’s barrage of rhythmic syllables and R&B influenced nuances come out on alot of our stuff subconciously. I could go on and on. 10 doesnt work. Ive not mentioned a single Motorhead, Priest, Thin Lizzy, or Hendrix record. No BOC, Hank Jr, or David Alan Coe lp. The Ventures, Cramps, Stones??? Built To Spill, Dinosaur Jr, Johnny Winter, Albert King, BB King, Buddy Guy, Zep?? Oh well…
